“I’d always written stories. It’d been part of my identity as long as I could remember. I would hammer out little stories and bind them together with tape to make a sort of makeshift spine. Words were just a part of me.”
- The Separation, Hannah Kay
Here is where I confess something sinister – as a writer, I often, if not always, sprinkle bits of myself into characters. I weave characters together with traits of myself – or my friends and family for that manner – and this is one of the strongest examples.
I have been a writer for all of my life, creating and learning. I, in fact, taped books together to make spines. I adored the art of writing and the music of language.
Now, as a twenty-three year old graduate of Mississippi State University, I am a first full year teacher, and I crave to share my love of literature and writing with the phenomenal students I will serve during this school year.
In fact, this summer I had the opportunity to teach a kiddie creative writing class for the spectacular students of my school district, and it was beyond fun to watch light bulbs go off in their minds!
Look at these sweet little books we created - they might not be held together with tape, but they reminded me of a young Hannah Kay, researching ice skating at the public library for a silly short story and imitating the books I love[ed] so much.
